There are two types of Native Drums: 1. Hand drums (usually 12 - 17 inches wide and 3 inches high ) 2. Pow Wow or Sundance drums(from 20 -36 inches wide and 15inches tall). These bigger drums can be heard up to 8 miles away (12km) and they will accommodate up to 16 singers.(drummers)

Hand Drum Hoops do not use nails

Piita's Drums are handcrafted with genuine animal skins, rawhide, and cedar wood frames. These frames can also be bought separately. Each drum is unique and comes ready to play with drum stick. Through many years of association with the Blood Tribe People and association with their Sundances, Piita saw a need to put out a high quality drum for use in Native Ceremonies. With this association with the Blood Tribe, Piita was give the rite to make his drums, rattles and ceremonial pipes.

In native traditions, it is believed that the drum is a living thing. The spirit of the animal and the tree of which the drum is made both live on in the drum. Moreover, our drums are strung with prayers for their rebirth and transformation. When a drum finds its partner, it is a lifelong relationship.

These beliefs are further validated in practical application. The more you rub, handle and play your drum, the more your natural body oils penetrate the hide, thus lengthening its life and enriching it. For this reason, it is not traditional to play another person's drum.

You should also oil your drum with neetsfoot oil every few months in areas of most stress. Apply directly to the hide on the back, around the holes where the lace meets the wood. Drum Doctor is for the face and rim of your drum, as a regular moisturizer. Drums LOVE it and glow from its use, once a month or so.

CAUTION!!!

NEVER LEAVE YOUR DRUM IN A CAR, NEAR A VENT OR ANY HEAT SOURCE, OR WHERE THERE ARE SUDDEN CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE. DOING SO MAY CAUSE THE HIDE TO CRACK!!!

ADJUSTING THE TONE OF YOUR DRUM

TONE TOO HIGH?

Add moisture (mist front and back using water and a spritzer, or take into the bathroom when you shower).

TONE TOO DEEP?

Add heat (put in sun or next to heat source briefly, or use a hair dryer).

TONE FLAT AND DRUM RIPPLED?

Add heat as above (this is the extereme end of too deep -- do not worry -- tone will return as it dries!)

NATURAL HIDE DRUMS ARE VERY RESPONSIVE TO HEAT AND MOISTURE!!! ADJUST WITH CARE.
